Pescheria da Canemorto
Solo exhibition, 2023
MATTA, Milano (Italy)
The project is based on the idea of transforming an exhibition space into a real fish shop, in which various types of works on paper by CANEMORTO are sold and treated just like at the fish counter: fried drawings, drawing tartare , drawings in oil, drawings in salt, frozen drawings, scaled, filleted...

The layout of the space, entirely designed and created by the artists, imitates down to the smallest detail that of a typical popular fish shop with street window, sign, refrigerated counter, cash register, product shelves, price list and maritime decorations. For the entire duration of the project, the CANEMORTO trio plays the role of fishmongers, positioned behind the counter; they welcome the public with the impetuous attitude of fish sellers, pushing visitors to purchase fresh products amid shouts, offers and slogans. The performance also actively involves the three gallerists of MATTA, who take on the role of cashiers and shop assistants, helping to build a surreal atmosphere of a family-run shop.

Inside the Pescheria da Canemorto the curious passerby and the expert art collector are treated without distinction and find themselves projected into a parallel and immersive reality, in which it is absolutely normal to treat art like fish and sell it at the price of basic necessities, starting from a few pennies.

The project represents the third chapter of a series of performative exhibitions related to food (Pizzeria da Canemorto, Kapow, Gent, 2017 – Osteria da Canemorto, San Biagio, Orsenigo, 2019) in which CANEMORTO reshuffle the gap between everyday spaces and those of art, market dynamics, the value and conservation of works, the distinctions between art and craftsmanship.
