The Grattaprint is a series of scratch-off screen prints produced by CANEMORTO during a three-week residency at the Gate 44 printmaking studio. These are special screen prints available in three different formats (MINI, MEDIUM, MAXI), designed to be scratched using coins, keys, or other tools in order to transform into truly one-of-a-kind artworks. Only by scratching the surface of each print can one reveal the second image hidden beneath the first, and possibly find the symbol to win one of the surprise prizes offered by the trio.
The project was presented in a public park in Milan, where the trio set up a real street shop inside a van, selling their Grattaprints directly to people on site at affordable prices and inviting everyone to scratch them on the spot for the immediate awarding of prizes, which culminated in a grand final draw.
Each participant inevitably faced a dilemma: preserve their untouched Grattaprint with a collector’s mindset, or give in to curiosity and irreversibly “alter” the original artwork in search of a winning symbol?
